App Organizer for Mac: Options Compared

By Eduard Bruch, developer of Jetty ·

Searching for an "app organizer for Mac" returns a mix of file tidiers, uninstallers and launchers. If you want to group your apps into categories you define, such as by project, client or task, few kinds of tools do that.

Short answer: the best app for organizing your Mac apps into groups you define, in my opinion as its developer, is Jetty: it adds up to four extra docks to the edges of your screen, or floating anywhere, each with tabs of one-click tiles for apps, files, folders, websites and Shortcuts. It is a $9.99 one-time purchase on the Mac App Store and needs macOS 14 or later.

Disclosure: I build Jetty, so it is listed first as our pick. For a dated comparison table, see Dock apps for Mac compared.

What "organizing apps" means on macOS

Out of the box, macOS gives you a few ways to arrange apps:

  • The Applications folder: a plain list of installed apps in Finder.
  • Launchpad folders: on macOS 15 and earlier, you can drag apps into folders in a full-screen grid. On macOS 26 Tahoe, Launchpad was replaced by the Apps view (details here).
  • The Dock: a single row you arrange by dragging, with Stacks for folders.

None of these lets you build several named groups and switch between them. Organizing files on disk is also not the same as organizing how you open things day to day.

Options at a glance

Jetty (our pick)

Bars at your screen edges (or floating) with tabs of one-click tiles for apps, files, folders, websites and Shortcuts. You make the groups yourself. It does not search, does not replace the macOS Dock, and places its bars on your main screen.

The Dock with Stacks

Built into macOS. It gives you one arrangement of icons, plus folders that open as a fan, grid or list.

Spotlight

Built into macOS. A search box for apps, files and more. It does not group anything, but it needs no setup.

Raycast, Alfred, LaunchBar

Keyboard-driven launchers for Mac. See each product's own site for what it does.

uBar and DockThings

Apps that offer Dock-style or taskbar-style alternatives. See their own sites, or our notes on uBar alternatives and DockThings alternatives.

Why bars with tabs fit "organizing"

Jetty treats this as a launching problem rather than a filing problem. Your apps stay where they are on disk. What you build is a set of groups, and the organization lives in how you group them.

Categories you define

There is no default taxonomy. If "Writing", "Client A" and "Late night tools" make sense to you, those are valid tabs. Right-click a tab to rename or remove it.

More than apps

A tab can hold folders, files, websites and Shortcuts alongside apps. A project's tools and its working files can sit together. A folder tile opens a popup listing the folder's contents.

Layout you control

New apps go into the tab you choose, when you choose. You can drag tiles to reorder them, and set tile size, rows or columns and labels per bar. Jetty does not re-sort anything on its own.

What Jetty will not organize

Jetty does not move, rename or tidy files and does not uninstall apps. It also does not group apps automatically. If you need a file organizer, that is a different kind of tool.

For tips on setting up groups, see how to organize Mac apps by project.

If the clutter is on your desktop rather than in your app list, how to organize your Mac desktop walks through Stacks, folders and hiding desktop icons.

How we checked

Jetty's details on this page were checked against the app's source code and its App Store listing on 2026-10-10 and are collected on the facts page; I build Jetty. For built-in macOS steps, Apple's Mac User Guide is the reference for your version of macOS.

FAQ

How do I organize apps on a Mac?

Our pick, in my opinion as its developer, is Jetty: named tabs of app tiles on bars at your screen edges. For simple needs the built-in Dock and Launchpad folders (on macOS 15 and earlier) work too.

Can I make folders for apps on a Mac?

On macOS 15 and earlier, yes, in Launchpad. On macOS 26 Tahoe, Launchpad is gone, so you need another approach, such as tabs in Jetty.

Does Jetty move my apps?

No. Apps stay where they are. Jetty stores tiles that point to them.

Is Jetty a free app organizer?

No. Jetty is a $9.99 one-time purchase on the Mac App Store, with no subscription.
