Overflow 3 Alternative for Mac: Jetty vs Overflow

By Eduard Bruch, developer of Jetty ·

Overflow 3 and Jetty both hold a hand-picked set of apps, files, folders and websites outside the Dock. Overflow keeps them in a launcher window that you open when you need it. Jetty keeps them on up to four bars at the edges of your screen, visible and one click away. (Overflow here is Stunt Software's Mac launcher; overflow.io is an unrelated design tool.)

Short answer: if you want your launch tiles always on screen, grouped in tabs, the best Overflow alternative, in my opinion as its developer, is Jetty: bars on any screen edge or floating, a $9.99 one-time purchase on the Mac App Store, macOS 14 or later. If you prefer a window that opens on demand and type-to-search, Overflow 3 does that and Jetty does not.

When Jetty is the better choice

  • You want zero steps before the click. A Jetty tile is on screen; there is no window to open first.
  • You want several groups visible at once, for example daily apps on top and project folders on the left.
  • You run Shortcuts. A Shortcut tile runs a named shortcut from Apple's Shortcuts app.
  • You prefer the Mac App Store for purchase and updates.

When Overflow 3 is the better choice

  • You want a clean screen with nothing pinned to the edges. Overflow's window appears when you call it.
  • You like typing. Overflow's page lists type-to-search and keyboard control; Jetty has no search and no keyboard shortcut to open a bar.
  • You want Quick Look previews of files from the launcher, which Overflow's page describes.

Jetty's other limits: bars are on the main display only, and an auto-hidden bar comes back from Jetty's menu-bar item, not when you move the pointer to the edge.

Where each fits after Launchpad

Both are curated launchers: you add what you use, unlike a grid of every app. That makes either a good fit for people who lost Launchpad in macOS 26 Tahoe and only miss the click-to-open part; the options are ranked in Launchpad is gone in macOS Tahoe. If you are choosing between launcher types in general, see app launcher for Mac: menu bar launchers vs screen-edge bars and Raycast and Alfred vs a click-to-launch bar.

How we checked

On 2026-10-10 we read Overflow's own page for features and price; it does not state a minimum macOS, so we don't either. We did not install or test Overflow. Jetty's details come from its source code; I build Jetty. Nine more dock apps are compared in the best dock apps for Mac.
